Meryl Streep, an American actress once said;  ”Take your heart to work, and ask the most and best of everyone else too.”

Meryl Streep has received 15 Academy Award nominations, winning two, and 25 Golden Globe nominations, winning seven, more nominations than any other actor in the history of either award. Her work has also earned her two Emmy Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Cannes Film Festival award, four New York Film Critics Circle Awards, five Grammy Award nominations, a BAFTA award, an Australian Film Institute Award, and a Tony Award nomination.

As a general rule, I tend not to follow the Hollywood crowd, but in this case I believe Meryl Streep has some good advice on success.

Consider Others

First and foremost, Meryl Streep advices us to “take your heart to work.” It seems in many organizations today, “success” means to deliver results at any cost.  This attitude tends to cause discord as everyone develops a “me” focused approach to support this  ”do or die” mentality.  In this culture  there is little room for considering experience, skill, or circumstances; only results. Meryl’s advice means that we should defiantly set the bar high, but it should be relative to each individual’s capabilities.

Have High Expectations

Second, she advices each of us to “ask the most and best of everyone around us.”  People who strive to perform at their best are more apt to become vital and happy members of the team because they are more focused on the good of the whole, as opposed to only themselves. This helps reduce much of the backstabbing, finger pointing, and blame that infests many offices like a plague, crippling any hope of success.

Love Your Work

Last, Meryl Streep reminds us that “success” is only found when we are doing what we love. Anything else is just “Work!”

TRUTH: Never continue in a job you do not enjoy. If you are happy in what you are doing, you will like yourself, and will have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.

I read an article in Golf Digest about Roger Staubach.

He was quoted as saying  “Going the EXTRA  MILE means there will be very little traffic!”

This two-time Super Bowl Champion, six-time Pro Bowler, Heisman Trophy winner, legendary Hall of Fame quarterback, Vietnam Veteran, devout Christian, and successful  businessman, knows all about “success.”  He has spent his life driving, not only himself but everyone around him, to “go the extra mile.”

This made me wonder what I would have to do to be more like Roger:

• Demanding more of myself and more from everyone around me
• Being consistent on the principles that define who I am and what I expect of others
• Using every opportunity to score
• Letting my results do the talking
• Never lift myself up above anyone but always lifting everyone up
• Never lose sight of my goals
• Remember that acceleration and speed define momentum, but effort makes it happen

TRUTH:  Every life is a profession of faith, and an exercise of silent influence.
